BFI research into AI skills across Film and TV production

11 March 2026

Create Central, the West Midlands’ BFI Skills Cluster, is supporting new research that aims to better understand how artificial intelligence is being used by below-the-line professionals working across the UK’s film and television production sector.

The study, led by the University of Reading as part of the Screen Berkshire Skills Cluster in partnership with the British Film Institute (BFI), will map the current use of AI tools across production departments and explore the opportunities and concerns associated with their growing adoption.

As AI technologies develop rapidly, the research seeks to build a clearer evidence base to help inform future training, guidance and support for the workforce. The BFI has committed to developing resources that ensure industry professionals are able to engage with emerging technologies safely and confidently.

The research team will survey film and TV professionals across a range of roles to understand what is driving the use of AI tools in production workflows, as well as why some professionals are choosing not to use them.

Recognising that AI is a complex and often emotive topic across the creative industries, the study is being conducted from a neutral perspective, aiming to capture a balanced view of current practices and attitudes.

As a fellow BFI Skills Cluster, Create Central is encouraging professionals across its regional networks to take part in the short survey and contribute to a clearer national picture of how AI is shaping the screen industries.
