Why inclusive outreach matters - talent is everywhere, opportunity is not

A weekend read blog from our critical friends at Culture Central…

“When most people think about careers in television and film, they think of the people they see on screen. But every programme, series or film relies on hundreds of people working behind the scenes.

From production management and camera operations to sound, costume, lighting and editing, there are many different routes into the screen industries. Yet for many people, these careers can still feel out of reach.

At Culture Central, we believe talent is everywhere. Yet too many people still face barriers to accessing opportunities, building networks and progressing their careers in the screen industries.

Through our research and conversations with creative communities across the West Midlands over the last three years, we've heard how barriers can stop people from exploring screen careers. These include not knowing anyone in the sector, uncertainty about what jobs exist, travel costs, caring responsibilities, accessibility needs and confidence.

People from working-class backgrounds, disabled people, people from racialised communities, LGBTQI+ communities and others under-represented in creative careers can face additional barriers. Research shows that only 5.4% of the creative workforce comes from less advantaged socio-economic backgrounds, compared with 39% of the wider UK workforce.

A diverse screen sector is stronger, more creative and more representative of the audiences it serves. By opening opportunities more widely, the industry can benefit from a richer range of talent, ideas and experiences.

That's why inclusive outreach matters.

It's about making sure people know opportunities exist, can see a place for themselves in the industry and can access clear, welcoming information.

Good outreach starts before an application form. It means going to where people are, explaining roles plainly and removing avoidable barriers wherever possible.

"It was my first proper experience in a real production environment. I'd done short courses before, but this was the first time I got to see how a team actually runs."

"The best part was meeting people I wouldn't have met otherwise. I learned how departments connect and how to approach people professionally."

These experiences show that opening doors isn't just about training. It's also about building confidence, making connections and helping people feel that they belong.

Culture Central is proud to act as a critical friend to Create Central's Skills Accelerator programme. Using our networks, research and engagement work, we're helping to shape outreach activity so it reaches people and communities who have historically had less access to screen industry careers.

If you're curious about a career in film, television or the wider screen industries, we'd love to meet you at the Roadshow on Tuesday 25 August in Coventry.

You'll have the opportunity to hear from industry professionals, learn about training opportunities, ask questions and discover the many careers that exist behind the scenes.

The event is designed to be practical and welcoming. Whether you're interested in creative roles, technical skills, production support or simply want to understand what opportunities exist locally, it is a chance to ask questions and make connections in an accessible setting.

You don't need industry contacts. You don't need previous experience.

You just need an interest in finding out what's possible.

The screen industries need fresh talent, new perspectives and people from all walks of life. Your journey could start with a single conversation.”

Culture Central is a collective, and a collective voice for the West Midlands. It convenes, challenges and connects, to create opportunities through culture, for the people and places of the region.
